About

What: The Mongolia Unicycle Tour. It is an organised unicycle tour by Adventure Unicyclist and Bike Asia and Grasshopper Adventures

When: Monday 2 August 2010 (Day 1) to Friday 13 August 2010 (Day 12)

Why: Because it’s never been done before. And Unicycling is the coolest way to see the world.

You mean, you’re going to travel on one wheel? Yep

In Mongolia? Why not?

Is it hard? About half as difficult as, say, on a bicycle. We only have one wheel to balance, not two.

Does it hurt? Unicyclists have buttocks of steel, even on bumpy Mongolian roads

How far are you riding? 240km, 7 riding days

Hmm, might need to put some training in for this one. ;-)

    36″ Guni with 165/137mm cranks or 26″ Guni with a Gazza; hmm…

For unguni, is more coker of 29er suited?

In my mind, there is really no question as to the unicycle for this type of trip. For me, it’s the geared 36. Ungeared would work fine too of course. Geoff’s idea of 137/165 would probably work great, but I bet plain old 150 like I rode in India and Africa this year would also be ok. 150 is quite a bit of leverage and the photos sure don’t make it look steep.

Some people like 29ers better – if that’s you, then bring the 29er. Or even a geared 24 or 26. Corbin proved that even a geared 24 can thrive on a long hard tour (with properly motivated rider!)

Anyway, I doesn’t really matter what cycle you bring. Just bring what you like to ride and are comfortable with, but mainly, just GO! And for the N hemisphere guys, we don’t have to train – it’s in late summer! Geoff, you will indeed have to train since it’s winter for you.

This uni tour really appeals to me – being all off road, the camping and the location tops it off.

Sounds like it would be great on a single speed 36′er, or any GUni. I’d probably take a 24 GUni as that’s far and away my favourite uni these days.

Even though the tour ends on my lucky black friday birthday in August unfortunately I think it will take a miracle to get the $ together, else I’d be in!

For the guys going, hope you have a great time!
